Rock Music

Blues musician Muddy Waters sang, "Well the blues had a baby and they named the baby rock and roll." The blues was certainly a key component of rock music from the beginning, but it borrowed ideas from jazz (perhaps rock and roll's sibling) and even country music.

The word "rock and roll" was eventually shortened to "rock," but its reach extended from its roots in the 1950s. Indeed, depending on the individual definition, rock music encompasses much of what is called "pop" music in the 21st century. Not only has rock music been an ever widening genre, its status in terms of popularity reached levels unheard of by other musical forms.
